How Many More Solar Panels Do You Need for EV Charging?

The right panel count is driven by annual energy, not by an EV badge or a fixed number of panels. Use this method to get a preliminary estimate before requesting a roof-specific design.

Step 1: Estimate annual charging energy

Annual EV miles × vehicle kWh per mile ÷ charging efficiency = approximate annual wall electricity. As an example, 12,000 miles × 0.30 kWh per mile ÷ 0.90 = 4,000 kWh/year. This is a worked example, not a claim about your vehicle.

Use actual vehicle or charger data if available; efficiency and mileage vary widely.

Step 2: Estimate local annual solar production

Annual solar output depends on orientation, tilt, shade, climate, system losses and inverter limits. A roof-specific production model is more reliable than multiplying panel wattage by an assumed number of sunshine hours.

For illustration, if an added array were expected to generate 1,500 kWh annually per installed DC kW, 4,000 kWh of charging demand would correspond to approximately 2.7 kW DC. At 450 W per module, that is around six modules before engineering constraints. Actual production and panel count may be different.

Step 3: Check economics and the existing system

More solar production does not always offset nighttime charging dollar-for-dollar. Net billing export values, time-of-use rates, and whether you charge while solar is producing all change savings.

For an existing installation, verify inverter capacity, electrical service, roof access, warranties and interconnection. NEM grandfathering rules can outweigh the benefit of a modest expansion.

What to do next

Request a site-specific estimate based on 12 months of bills, charging energy and your existing solar system instead of buying a predetermined panel count.
